Today was the students' first day in their new classes. What
a delight it was to meet so many wonderful children. I look forward to
enjoying the year ahead in our new community.
One of the activities we did today was to
create "Forest Cologne." We went outside, and with a partner, the
children collected and combined natural materials in a cup to create the
"smell of the forest."
While the children created their concoctions, I overheard comments like, "It smells like mint," and "It smells like lemons." This led naturally to smelling each other's colognes and recording the various odours. As a class, we discussed some of the reasons humans might need a sense of smell.
