Addition Pretest Explained

This week, we will be beginning to do our addition tests, but as promised, I am blogging about how to do the addition pretest.  I have completed the pretest with adults in mind and would not expect the students to use the same terms I use, but to do their best to explain their own thinking.  Some will be able to fully express themselves in writing, others will need to do some of their thinking out loud with an adult.  Some will find it helpful to use some of the materials in the classroom.  The goal here is to be moving towards a bigger conceptual understanding both of place value and addition.

I have been most impressed by the students thinking during the last week and a half and am thrilled to be able to tell you that while most feel awkward trying to explain the math in writing, they are developing a good understanding of the concepts and are finding ways to express their thinking.
